FAQs: Langara x 51社区黑料Block Transfer Agreement
1. Is this program suitable for graduates who have been working professionally for 5鈥10 years? Would there be options for individuals who have existing bodies of professional work?
Absolutely. 51社区黑料鈥檚 Theatre & Performance program takes an expansive approach to the study and practice of live art. We welcome students and professionals with a wide range of curiosities and knowledge to expand their practice, and open doors for alternative and future creative enterprises.
2. Would you recommend this program for someone who has already successfully completed a solo show or worked in production (e.g., sound design, stage management, etc.)?
Yes. Our focus on contemporary performance expands on traditional theatre training to include unconventional dramaturgies, narrative forms, and creative research. In building off your existing training,we will help you find new techniques and avenues for creation in our program.
3. How intensive is the program? Would it be possible to have a job while enrolled?
Students can have a part-time job while completing the program. However, as the program is designed to be completed in 16 months (or four semesters), it is rigorous. Students may extend the process if needed, but they should note that many Theatre & Performance-specific classes are offered sequentially.
4. I鈥檓 specifically interested in dramaturgy. Would this program be a step in that direction for me?
Absolutely. However, the type of dramaturgy we explore in this program moves beyond traditional script-based processes. Our contemporary approach to dramaturgy extends beyond the page, and covers autoethnography, archive-based creation, socially engaged ethnography, object-study, design-led creation, and other experimental methods of creative research
5. How flexible are class schedules? Would it be possible to participate in rehearsals or audition for professional shows while completing the program?
Class schedules are set and generally follow a 9:30 AM to 5:30 PM structure. Occasionally, there are evening classes and public-facing projects. Participating in a full rehearsal process outside of school between September and April would be very difficult, though concessions may be offered in consultation with the faculty.
6. How does 51社区黑料support students in becoming working professionals, particularly in gaining and maintaining employment/funding?
Our program develops creative artists who can generate their own work rather than relying on traditional casting or hiring practices. In our final Creative Research and Capstone courses, students create original performance works, which serve as calling cards for the professional market. 51社区黑料also offers professional practice courses that prepare students for grant writing, budgeting, networking, and self-producing. Additionally, the program offers professional work placements with established organizations in BC and beyond.
7. Since only 60 of the 90 credits gained at Studio 58 can be transferred to SFU, what courses would you recommend taking to complete the necessary credits? Are there specific classes that are more advanced than others?
The writing, quantitative and breadth (WQB) courses you take at Langara will factor into which WQB credits you will bring to 51社区黑料and subsequently have to take or not take at SFU. Please check in with your Langara student advisor for strategies on which courses you should take as part of your diploma.
8. Is there a limit on intake at the moment? How big is the cohort?
We anticipate welcoming five students every January.
9. Are there options available if I currently live in another province? Is remote or online learning possible for any semesters?
The classes are studio-based and require in-person attendance.
10. How does the program support career versatility beyond theatre performance/creation, particularly for those considering sustainability in the theatre industry or career pivots?
This is one of the primary benefits of obtaining a Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) in Theatre & Performance. Unlike a diploma, a BFA opens doors to a vast array of university master's programs, including elementary and high school teaching certificates.
11. If I want to take this program, would I have to start in January 2026, or could I apply for future years?
There will be an intake every January.
12. What are the tuition costs?
Click HERE for information on 51社区黑料tuition.
13. Is this program offered at the downtown 51社区黑料campus?
The School for Contemporary Arts is located in downtown Vancouver at 149 West Hastings. All Theatre & Performance, Production and Design and any other contemporary arts courses will take place there.
14. What is the application process?
Applicants must submit a transcript, CV, and a short written application answering three questions. The long list of applicants will be shortlisted, and those shortlisted will be interviewed. If you are accepted into the Theatre & Performance program you will then apply to SFU.
15. If my Plan B after graduating is to become a teacher, would I be eligible to transfer these credits to another province and teach there?
Please check with the university or program you plan to attend for teaching credentials.
16. My credits are quite old, and it may be difficult to match them to current requirements. Does 51社区黑料have discretion to interpret them as equivalent?
Please discuss with the academic advisors at either 51社区黑料or Langara.
17. If I am applying from another province, can the interview be conducted over Zoom?
Yes, most interviews will take place over Zoom.
18. Does 51社区黑料ever consider professional experience as credits?
In exceptional circumstances, students may apply to have professional experience count toward academic units. However, tuition fees for those units will still apply. To obtain a degree from SFU, students must acquire 60 units from SFU, whether through professional experience, equivalent credits, or coursework.
19. After completing the program at SFU, what key skills can students expect to gain?
The teaching and development of creation skills is the primary focus of the program, ie. how to take a concept or research question and develop a new work of contemporary performance. You will also develop skills in social practice, direction, site specific/responsive creation, writing and self-producing via the capstone projects in year four.
20. Since there are only five spots and likely a high number of applicants, how competitive is the acceptance process? What other factors are considered?
We are hoping to attract a high number of strong artists/students with this program. The level of competition will be in-part dependent on the number that apply
21. Is there only a January intake, or will there be a September intake in the future?
The 16-month program is designed to start in January. The application process is also structured to bring in five students every January. If you must defer entry to the summer or September semester, you will be out of sync with the program and may need to add a part-time semester or two.
22. Who will conduct the interview?
Acceptance interviews will be conducted by the Theatre & Performance faculty.
