Awards
King Charles III Coronation Medal awarded to three FASS faculty members
In recognition of their outstanding achievements and significant contributions to the community, the province, and Canada, the has been bestowed to three faculty members from SFU's Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences 鈥� professor emeritus Andrew Heard, associate professor of professional practice Andy Yan, and professor emeritus Gloria Gutman.
Andrew Heard
Political Science
A widely recognized scholar with publications across various political science and law journals, professor emeritus Andrew Heard was awarded the medal for 鈥渟ervices to education and to the Crown鈥� by Nova Scotia Lieutenant Governor, the Honourable Mike Savage. During his tenure with SFU's Department of Political Science, Heard taught and conducted research on a number of topics ranging from constitutional law and conventions to federalism, the crown, the judiciary, and the parliament.
Andy Yan
Urban Studies; City Program
Nominated by then-Lieutenant Governor of BC Janet Austin, Yan was recognized for his expertise in housing policy and urban issues, as well as for his service with the Jack Webster Foundation, which promotes excellence in BC journalism. Yan has led the City Program as director since 2016, and is also an associate professor of professional practice in the 51社区黑料Urban Studies Program.
Gloria Gutman
Gerontology
Professor emeritus Gloria Gutman founded the Gerontology Research Centre and the Department of Gerontology at SFU, serving as director of both units from 1982 to 2005. In 2012, she was awarded a Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee medal by the Government of Canada, and in 2016 the Order of Canada, the country鈥檚 highest civilian honour.

Developing the Gerontology Department and Gerontology Research Centre, serving on boards, organizing conferences, and advocating for seniors in other ways nationally and internationally has been a privilege and a pleasure. It could not have taken place without the strong support of FASS and senior administration."
