Anil Arora
Biography
Anil Arora served as the 12th Chief Statistician of Canada from September 2016 to March 2024, leading Statistics Canada through a comprehensive modernization of its digital governance, technical infrastructure, and data strategy. During his tenure, he oversaw amendments to the Statistics Act to increase the agency's independence, established the Canadian Statistics Advisory Council, and successfully conducted the 2016 and 2021 censuses. His distinguished public service career spans over 35 years, including roles as Assistant Deputy Minister at Natural Resources Canada and Health Canada, where he also chaired the International Coalition of Medicines Regulatory Authorities from 2014 to 2016. He led the 2006 Census redesign that introduced online questionnaires and chaired the OECD Committee on Statistics and Statistical Policy from 2022 to 2023. Anil currently serves as Adjunct Lecturer at Harvard Kennedy School teaching digital governance and leadership in the public sector, Global Digital Consultant at the World Bank, and sits on the Board of Directors of the Centre for International Governance Innovation. He holds a B.Sc. from the University of Alberta and has earned numerous accolades including Outstanding Innovator (2023) and one of the Top 25 Immigrants in Canada (2022).
