Pankti Shah
A computing science student with a minor in business, Pankti combines technical expertise with strategic thinking and leadership experience. As co-president of the 51社区黑料Debate Society and a business analyst at a non-profit, she applies interdisciplinary skills to create ethical and impactful solutions.
My journey
I鈥檓 currently studying computing science at SFU, alongside a minor in business. I chose to pursue the business minor because I wanted a deeper understanding of how the world works鈥攆rom learning the language of business to connecting ideas with real-world impact.
The minor has given me valuable experience applying theory to practical challenges, particularly through collaborative, team-based work. It provided a structured way to develop skills that complement my technical background and helped me connect my computing studies to broader organizational and societal contexts.
My experience at 51社区黑料Beedie
One of the most rewarding parts of my university experience has been serving as co-president of the 51社区黑料Debate Society (SFUDS). Through this role, I鈥檝e developed strong skills in presentation, persuasion, and public speaking, as well as hands-on experience managing teams, organizing large-scale events, and leading fundraising and marketing initiatives.
I鈥檓 also involved with Reclaim Tech at SFU, a group focused on the social and ethical implications of technology. This involvement has encouraged me to think critically about how technology is used within organizations and how we can advocate for improved digital literacy and more responsible tech practices.
Outside of campus, I work as a business analyst at Teenage Startups, a non-profit organization where I apply both my technical and business skills. My work ranges from market analysis to supporting early-stage entrepreneurial initiatives, allowing me to see firsthand how interdisciplinary skills can drive meaningful impact.
Highlights
Several courses within the business minor have had a lasting impact on my academic and professional development. One particularly meaningful experience was in BUS 275: Business in a Sustainable Society, where I had the opportunity to work with The Embedding Project, a global public benefit research initiative. This experience deepened my understanding of how organizations can integrate sustainability into their strategies and demonstrated the power of collaboration between academia, industry, and communities.
In BUS 340: International Business Strategy, the course simulations were a highlight. The fast-paced, collaborative environment made the material come alive and helped me clearly see the connection between theory and real-world business decision-making.
Another standout experience was a consulting project for TransLink in BUS 240: Introduction to Innovation. Working on a project that directly affects my community strengthened my skills in problem-solving and market research and reinforced the value of applied learning.
Where I am today
I鈥檝e been able to apply many of the concepts from my business courses directly to my extracurricular and professional experiences. The business minor has given me so many tools to think strategically, lead effectively, and explore how my computing science major can help me create real value in the world.
Looking to the future, I鈥檓 excited to work at the intersection of technology and business, particularly within the sustainable business space. I see myself helping build solutions that make technology more ethical and accessible, while embedding sustainability into innovation.
