A fourth-year Communication Studies student with a minor in Business, Mahan combines a passion for research and academic writing with hands-on business and teamwork experience. Through student leadership, peer education, and entrepreneurship, he has built strong communication, collaboration, and practical business skills.

My journey

I鈥檓 a fourth-year student at 51社区黑料majoring in communication studies with a minor in Business. I chose communication studies because of my interest in research and academic writing, and I pursued a business minor because of my passion for teamwork and business-related activities. I believe my major and minor complement each other well, helping me strengthen a diverse set of skills.

My academic journey has been a great adventure. Three and a half years ago, I moved to Canada and began my studies at Fraser International College, which marked the start of my path to SFU. Along the way, I learned important skills such as time management and effective communication鈥攕kills that have benefited me both academically and personally.

What ultimately motivated me to pursue a business minor was the emphasis on teamwork and practical skill development. After speaking with other students who had completed the minor and learning about courses in accounting, marketing, international business, and management information systems, I felt confident that this path would broaden my skill set and enhance my academic experience.

My experience at 51社区黑料Beedie

I have been actively involved in several extracurricular activities during my time at SFU. I participated in a peer education program at Fraser International College, where students who excelled in specific subjects supported and guided their peers.

I was also involved in multiple student clubs. I worked in the marketing department for MISA (Management Information Systems Association), served in the internal affairs department for Ascend, and co-founded a student club called ACIT with a group of friends, where we also hosted an online event.

Through these experiences, I developed strong communication and teamwork skills鈥攎any of which closely align with what is taught in the business minor. Coordinating effectively as a group and communicating clearly were key contributors to our success in these roles.

Highlights

One of the most impactful experiences in my business minor was BUS 340: International Business. The course included a competitive simulation where teams competed against one another over several classes. This activity was especially exciting because it created a real-world, competitive environment and challenged us to think strategically under pressure.

It was the first time I experienced direct competition against other groups in an academic setting, which made the learning experience both compelling and memorable while reinforcing how business concepts apply in practice.

Where I am today

I鈥檝e been able to apply many concepts from my business courses to both my work and personal life. For example, the accounting concepts I learned in BUS 311 helped me calculate break-even points for my own small start-up business. This allowed me to make more realistic financial decisions and better understand the implications of my business choices.

Looking ahead, my next step is to apply for professional roles while continuing to run my own business. I believe working within a corporate environment will allow me to gain skills and experience that I wouldn鈥檛 learn by working solely for myself. In five to ten years, I see myself growing my own start-up while also holding a strong position within a corporation.
