Event Description
The Climate Action Research Workshop Series supports graduate students from U of T and 51社区黑料in building the skills, relationships, and perspectives needed to conduct community鈥慹ngaged, justice鈥憃riented climate research. Through four interactive workshops offered from April to June, participants will explore collaborative partnership models, pathways for activating hope through research, equity鈥慸riven approaches, and effective climate communication.

Workshop 1: UTSC鈥檚 Partnership & Engagement Framework
April 14, 1鈥�3 PM ET / 10 AM-12 PM PT
Delivered by UTSC鈥檚 Community Partnerships & Engagement Office, this session introduces the , an innovative, community-informed model designed to guide meaningful collaborations between students, faculty, staff, and community partners. Rooted in anti-colonial practices and a commitment to intentional inclusion, reciprocity, and relational accountability, the workshop offers a visual map and resource guide to help participants build sustainable, trust-based partnerships.
Workshop 2: Climate Action Research 鈥� Activating Hope Through Participation
April 28, 1鈥�3 PM ET / 10 AM-12 PM PT
Led by Tara Mahoney from SFU鈥檚 Community-Engaged Research Initiative (CERi), this workshop explores how participatory climate research can cultivate agency, resilience, and critical hope. Drawing on the framework of the seven principles of critical hope (Grain, 2022), participants will examine examples of community-engaged climate research and reflect on how participatory approaches can sustain researchers and communities while fostering meaningful climate action.
Workshop 3: EDI and Climate Action Research
May 27, 1鈥�3 PM ET / 10 AM - 12 PM PT
This session鈥攆acilitated by UTSC鈥檚 Equity, Diversity & Inclusion Office鈥攑rovides guidance on embedding EDI principles throughout the research process. Participants will explore inclusive methodologies, ethical considerations, and approaches for addressing systemic inequities in climate-related research.
Workshop 4: Climate Communication Workshop
June 16, 1鈥�3 PM ET / 10 AM-12 PM PT
This final workshop Tara Mahoney from SFU鈥檚 Community-Engaged Research Initiative (CERi) strengthens participants鈥� climate communication skills, focusing on clarity, accuracy, storytelling, and audience engagement. Participants will learn how to share research findings effectively across academic, community, and public contexts.
