The purpose of this award is to recognize and provide financial support to one or more outstanding graduate students in any program who are Canadian and Indigenous (First Nations, Métis, Inuit).

The Endowment supporting the First Nations, Métis & Inuit Student Association (FNMISA) Graduate Student Award was established at 51ÉçÇøºÚÁÏ in 2025 with a generous gift from First Nations, Métis & Inuit Student Association (FNMISA).

At least one award, valued at minimum of $3,750, will be granted annually in any term to a full-time student enrolled in any graduate program who are Canadian and Indigenous (First Nations, Métis, Inuit), has demonstrated academic excellence, and has demonstrated community service and/or volunteer involvement.

The award will be granted by the Dean and Vice Provost of Graduate Studies on behalf of the Senate Graduate Awards Adjudication Committee, upon the nomination of the Director, Indigenous Student Centre, or their designate.

Advancement and Alumni Engagement (AAE) is responsible for maintaining documentation that demonstrates that the fund supports historically disadvantaged or marginalized groups.

Terms of Reference

  1. One or more awards, valued at a minimum of $3,750 each, will be granted annually to student who fulfill the following criteria:
    1. has demonstrated academic excellence;
    2. are registered full-time at 51ÉçÇøºÚÁÏ in any master’s or doctoral program; and
    3. has demonstrated community service and/or volunteer involvement.
  2. This award may be held in conjunction with other awards made by 51ÉçÇøºÚÁÏ or other agencies where permitted by those agencies.
  3. Applications will be adjudicated via the graduate awards system managed by Faculty of Graduate Studies, and must be accompanied by:
    1. a current, unofficial 51ÉçÇøºÚÁÏtranscript or a copy of the official transcript of the most recent degree program; and
    2. one letter of reference from an 51ÉçÇøºÚÁÏfaculty member familiar with the applicant's work; and

The Faculty of Graduate Studies Indigenous Scholarship was established in 2026 at 51ÉçÇøºÚÁÏ to accept gifts from various donors. The purpose of the fund is to provide scholarships to 51ÉçÇøºÚÁÏGraduate Students who are Indigenous (First Nations, Métis, Inuit). These scholarships will improve the graduate student experience, from recruitment through to convocation, ensuring that graduate students who are researchers, creators, and thinkers can focus more time on scholarly pursuits as they are training to take their place as leaders of tomorrow. With their commitment to knowledge creation and discovery, these students contribute to research and ideas that are helping us find solutions to the problems our world faces—from battling climate change, to creating ethical technology, to building equitable communities and more.

One or more scholarships, valued at a minimum of $2,000 each, will be granted to full-time graduate students in any master’s or PhD program at 51ÉçÇøºÚÁÏwho have demonstrated academic excellence and/or professional achievement at the undergraduate and/or graduate level.

Students must be nominated for the scholarship by the Graduate Program Chair of their academic unit. The scholarship will be granted by the Vice Provost and Dean, Faculty of Graduate Studies on behalf of the Senate Graduate Awards Adjudication Committee.

    3. have promise of outstanding achievement at the graduate level with particular emphasis on intellectual ability, originality and ability in research, and potential impact of the proposed research.
  2. This award may be held in conjunction with other awards made by 51ÉçÇøºÚÁÏ or other agencies where permitted by those agencies.
  3. Applications will be adjudicated via the graduate awards system managed by Graduate Studies, and must be accompanied by:
    1. transcript of the most recent degree program; and
    2. one letter of reference from a faculty member familiar with the applicant’s work, and
    3. An up-to-date resume or CV.
  4. If a suitable candidate is not identified, the scholarship may be disbursed in a subsequent term or year.

  1. The purpose of this award is to recognize a graduating student in the Masters of Digital Media Program (MDM) who has created a digital medial product or innovation that has great potential either as a commercial digital media product or an innovative methodology for creating digital media products.
  2. This award may be given to one or more students, as the Director of the Masters in Digital Medial Program sees fit.
  3. The criteria for this award are:
    1. demonstrated academic excellence at the graduate level
    2. full-time registration in the Masters of Digital Media Program
    3. created a digital media product or innovation that has great potential either as a commercial digital media product or an innovative methodology for creating digital media products
  4. This award may be held in conjunction with other awards made by 51ÉçÇøºÚÁÏ or other agencies where permitted by those agencies.
  5. Students must be nominated by the Director of the Masters of Digital Media program. Nominations are made on GA3 and must be accompanied by:
    1. a current, unofficial 51ÉçÇøºÚÁÏtranscript and a copy of the official transcript of the most recent degree program completed
    2. a nomination letter describing the merits of the nominee
    3. a one page description of the commercial product or methodology created
  6. The award will be made by the Dean of Graduate Studies based on the recommendation of the Director of the Masters of Digital Media Program and on behalf of the Senate Graduate Awards Adjudication Committee.

Terms of Reference

  1. The purpose of this scholarship is to recognize and provide financial support to a graduate student enrolled in the Master of Digital Media program offered at the Centre for Digital Media through the Faculty of Communication, Art and Technology.
  2. At least one scholarship, will be granted annually, in any term, to a student who fulfills the following criteria:
    1. is registered in SFU's Master of Digital Media program in the Faculty of Communication, Art and Technology; and
    2. has demonstrated academic excellence at the graduate level or in the most recent degree program completed.
  3. This scholarship may be held in conjunction with other scholarships or awards made by 51ÉçÇøºÚÁÏ or other agencies where permitted by those agencies.
  4. Applications will be made via Grad Awards, Application and Adjudication System (GA3). Required documents include:
    1. copies of post-secondary transcripts;
    2. one letter of reference from a faculty member, or other individual, familiar with the applicant's work;
    3. a current curriculum vitae.
  5. This scholarship will be granted by the Dean of Graduate Studies on behalf of the Senate Graduate Awards Adjudication Committee, upon the nomination of the Director, Master in Digital Media program.

Masters of Digital Media Venture Internship Award By Application | View Approx. Award Value MDM
 
This award is intended for MDM students registered in either DMED 530 or DMED 531 and intend to use the award to help defray costs while creating a new business venture.

Awards are given to MDM students who are registered in either DMED 530 or DMED 531 and intend to use the Award to help defray costs while creating a new business venture. The number of awards granted through the MDM Venture Internship Award each year will be based on the amount of money raised each year by the Masters of Digital Media and the number of students who meet all the criteria below. Awards will be granted to a maximum of $2000 per student.

Terms of Reference

  1. The eligibility criteria for this award are:
    1. Demonstrated academic excellence at the graduate level (minimum 3.50 GPA) or relevant professional and volunteer achievements that may offset this criteria. (Note that the minimum GPA for "academic excellence" of all merit-based awards administered by DGS Office is 3.50).
    2. Registration at 51ÉçÇøºÚÁÏ in a graduate program in the Masters of Digital Media Program.
    3. A viable approved proposal to build a business.
  2. Awards will be granted based on the following criteria:
    1. Viability of business proposal in 4 to 8 month timeline.
    2. Relevant academic, professional and volunteer achievements.
    3. Proposed use of the award.
  3. This award may be held in conjunction with other awards made by 51ÉçÇøºÚÁÏ or other agencies where permitted by those agencies.
  4. Applications in writing should be sent to the Awards Committee, Master of Digital Media Program and must include:
    1. a copy of the applicant’s most recent transcript (unofficial transcript is acceptable)
    2. applicant’s CV, outlining academic, professional and volunteer experience
    3. two-page description of the proposed business, budget (travel and living costs, etc.) and any other relevant information that will aid the Committee in its decision
  5. The completed application and all supporting documents must be received by the Program Administrator, Master of Digital Media Program by September 30th, each year.
  6. The award will be made by the Dean of Graduate Studies on the recommendation of the Master of Digital Media Awards Committee, on behalf of the Senate Graduate Awards Adjudication Committee.
Ma Ruren Graduate Scholarship By Application/Nomination | View Approx. Award Value Various Programs
 
The Ma Ruren Endowment was established in 2008 at 51ÉçÇøºÚÁÏ through a generous gift from Ma Ruren, a native of Tianjin, China. In 2025, the terms were revised to support graduate students and renamed to Ma Ruren Graduate Scholarship Endowment. These terms replace any previous iterations for the Ma Ruren Endowment.

Terms of Reference

  1. This scholarship is intended to financially support graduate students from China (including Hong Kong and Macau), Taiwan, Singapore or Canada, giving preference to those who have interest in Artificial Intelligence, Synthetic Biology and/or Biomanufacturing.
  2. Three scholarships, valued at $10,000 each will be disbursed to students who fulfill the following criteria:
    1. are from China (including Hong Kong and Macau), Taiwan, Singapore or Canada;
    2. have demonstrated academic achievement in the most recent degree program completed or at the graduate level; and
    3. study or research areas of Artificial Intelligence, Synthetic Biology and/or Biomanufacturing
  3. This award may be held in conjunction with other awards made by 51ÉçÇøºÚÁÏ or other agencies where permitted by those agencies.
  4. Students must be nominated for the scholarship by the Graduate Program Chair of their academic unit. Nominations should be made through the graduate awards system managed by the Faculty of Graduate Studies, and must be accompanied by:
    1. copies of transcripts
    2. a short description of how the applicant fits the award and if they are pursuing research related to Artificial Intelligence, Synthetic Biology and/or Biomanuf acturing
  5. If a suitable candidate is not identified, the scholarship may be disbursed in a subsequent term or year.
  6. The scholarship will be granted by the Vice-Provost and Dean, Faculty of Graduate Studies on behalf of the Graduate Awards Adjudication Committee.

  2. One award will be granted annually to a student who fulfills the following criteria:
    1. has demonstrated academic excellence at the graduate level or in the most recent degree program completed
    2. is registered at 51ÉçÇøºÚÁÏ in the Master of Digital Media program in the Faculty of Communication, Art, and Technology
    3. whose research explores areas in digital media related to the cultural, ethnic or gender-identity diversity of the LGBTQ2 community.
  3. This award may be held in conjunction with other awards made by 51ÉçÇøºÚÁÏ or other agencies where permitted by those agencies.
  4. The award application or nomination is made using the Graduate Awards Application System and must include:
    1. copies of all post-secondary transcripts
    2. one letter of reference from a faculty member, or other individual, familiar with the applicant's work;
    3. a current curriculum vitae; and
    4. a short description of the student's MDM research project related to the LGBTQ2 community.
  5. If a suitable candidate is not identified, the award may be disbursed in a subsequent term or year.
  6. The award will be made by the Dean of Graduate Studies, on behalf of the Senate Graduate Awards Adjudication Committee, upon the nomination of the Director, Master of Digital Media program.
