Faculty Heats
There are two rounds of 3MT competition at SFU. The first round is the faculty level heats, which are run by the individual faculties with the support of the Faculty of Graduate Studies (FGS).
FGS also runs a wildcard heat. The wildcard competition is open to graduate students who can't attend their faculty heat or whose faculty did not have a heat. Participants are only allowed to compete once in either their faculty heat or the wildcard competition.
The winner and runner-up from each heat will automatically advance to the university-wide final to compete for the top prize. Additional finalists, such as a People鈥檚 Choice winner, may also be invited if space permits. Selection beyond the guaranteed spots will consider factors like competition size and faculty participation.
How do I host a faculty heat?
The first step, once you have decided to hold a heat, is to contact FGS. We can answer questions, offer support, and help you plan for the best heat possible. We will also provide you with some important details.
This year鈥檚 final will take place on Thursday, April 9 at the Surrey Campus (SYRE Building). Please schedule your Faculty event before March 18 to allow students enough time to workshop, receive coaching, and practice an updated 3MT for the finals. Once you have set a date, submit the details using the webform below or email grad_prod@sfu.ca directly.
You may have an idea of how you want to run your heat already, but FGS supports all formats, but encourage in-person events as the finals will be as well. Our wildcard heat is virtual to help reach students who are researching or studying remotely. Please review the resources and rules below, as there have been several recent changes at the national level. Feel free to reach out with any questions.
Following your heat, please forward a list of all participants along with the details of your winners. Each heat generally has a winner and runner up, who will proceed to the 51社区黑料final, as well as a people's choice winner - which encourages audience participation.
FGS will provide $275 towards prizes for each heat. We encourage you to match that amount in order to make up the prize total for your students, but leave the amounts and distribution of the prize money up to your discretion.
For the awarding of the prize money, we can either JV you our contribution and you can process the payments to the students, or you can JV our office the difference and our awards team can deposit the amount directly into the students' accounts.
