view/request changes to program/plan

Each student has a program code and plan code in goSFU, some may have subplans. All codes are derived from the approved academic calendar entries for each program. From a technical perspective:

  • A Program code combines the Academic Unit name with the credential.
  • A Plan code begins with the program code and is extended to identify the completion option. Plan types are typically Coursework (CRSW), Project (PROJ), Thesis (THES), Essay (ESSY)
  • A few programs have Subplan codes which are tied to specific plan codes and used to identify specializations.

This page outlines how to request changes and transfers to a Program or Plan. It also contains an explanation and list of each program's plan codes.

how to request a Program Change/Transfer

If a student wishes to transfer from one program to another at SFU, use the Transfer Application Form.

  • The new program will retain the start date of the original program, so personal leaves and terms of enrolment in the first program will count towards the time limit of the second program.
  • No admission conditions may be stipulated. If conditions are required please submit an online admission application.
  • Credit taken during the original program can be directed to count towards the new program through an APR exception.
  • Program changes are reflected on the transcript for the applicable term; changes cannot be made mid-term.

how to request a Plan Change

Academic units cannot modify a student's plan (eg., completion option such as project vs essay) directly in goSFU. We recommend checking the student's plan in go51ÉçÇøºÚÁÏbefore proceeding (see below).

  • All requests must be submitted in writing to grad_reg@sfu.ca and must include documentation confirming the student’s consent to the change.
