How to Run "What-If" Reports
This page is temporary while we build it in the newer Faculty & Staff pages.

The What-If (WHIF) report type allows staff members to run an academic progress report in a simulation environment. There are two options in the WHIF report type that can be run separately or together:
Career Simulation
Career Simulation allows users to see how additions or changes to a student's program, plan, or sub-plan will impact a student's progress. An example of when this could be used is when a student wishes to transfer to a new program. In this situation, the program code could be changed in the simulation report (WHIF) which means the what-if report would show which requirements are satisfied and which are outstanding using the student's actual courses and the new program requirements.
Navigation in SIMS: Academic Advisement > Student Advisement > Request Advisement Report
Click to expand step-by-step instructions 鈫
- Select 'Add a New Value' tab
- Enter student ID
- Choose 'WHIF' under report type
- Click Add
You have the option of either using the 'Copy Current Program' function or entering all required fields manually. If you use the copy function, all program information for the student will be copied from the Student Program/Plan page into the appropriate fields. Once the information is copied you can then make changes: field values can be changed or rows inserted or removed for any of the fields. When done making changes, click OK.
Important: If a student has multiple careers, even discontinued ones, the Copy Current Program function copies all of their careers. Remove the unwanted panels. If you don鈥檛 do this the APR will run for all programs, including discontinued ones.
WHIF reports look very similar to other APR reports once run and do not differentiate WHIF programs/plans/subplans from those that are not WHIF. There are only a couple distinguishing features:
- The report heading will state 鈥淚ncludes what-if courses and programs/plans.鈥
- The legend bar will show the What-if symbol.
- Select 'Add a New Value' tab
- Enter student ID
- Choose 'WHIF' under report type
- Click Add
When viewing the What-If report, What-If Course(s) appear with a 鈥?鈥 icon in the status field as shown below.
