Dr. Chao Chun (Jimmy) Liu鈥檚 doctoral thesis, , focused on bacterial whole鈥慻enome sequencing. Liu鈥檚 unprecedented analysis of nearly 200,000 global Salmonella DNA sequences uncovered hidden patterns of transmission and evolution. He also developed new computational methods integrating these hidden patterns to more accurately identify related Salmonella infections and trace outbreaks with greater precision than current gold standard methods.
Liu鈥檚 research adopted a 鈥淥ne Health鈥 perspective that integrates human, animal and environmental health data, advancing the field of bacterial genomics by contributing both theoretical insights and practical tools to improve outbreak detection, enhance food safety and help protect communities from widespread foodborne illnesses. Working in collaboration with BC Centre for Disease Control and the Public Health Agency of Canada to successfully investigate a previous multi-national outbreak using the tools he developed to strengthened national genomic sequencing and bioinformatics capacity.
In addition to maintaining a perfect 4.33 GPA, Liu first鈥慳uthored two publications with only his academic supervisor as the co鈥慳uthor, as well as peer-reviewed publications resulting from collaborations with public health and animal health laboratories. He is also highly committed in training future generations of bioinformaticians by co-leading an 51社区黑料Genomics Hackathon, instructed Canadian Bioinformatics Workshops, and mentored students and professionals in genomic data analysis.
Liu鈥檚 academic supervisor, William Hsiao, applauds Liu鈥檚 academic excellence, research impact, and leadership.
Says, Hsiao, 鈥淎 distinguishing nature of Jimmy鈥檚 doctoral research is its level of independence and scope. His two first-authored publications in leading journals (mBio and Microbial Genomics) only had the two of us as authors. For both publications, Jimmy independently conducted method development, large-scale analysis, empirical validation, and manuscript preparation, demonstrating exceptional productivity and scientific leadership.鈥
Receiving the Dean鈥檚 Convocation Medal is a tremendous honour for Liu and reflects the mentorship, collaboration and opportunities he experienced at SFU.
Say Liu, 鈥淚 am deeply grateful to Dr. William Hsiao for his mentorship, trust and unwavering support throughout my doctoral training. My time at 51社区黑料allowed me to pursue ambitious and highly independent research while building meaningful collaborations with public health, animal health and academic partners across Canada. These experiences have profoundly shaped my growth as a independent investigator and solidified my commitment to developing practical genomic solutions that improve public health, animal health and food safety.鈥
Liu is currently working as an 51社区黑料postdoctoral fellow and as a bioinformatics consultant for BC Animal Health Centre and Prairie Diagnostic Services Inc, where he continues to develop open鈥憇ource tools for pathogen genomic surveillance and working towards a more data-driven, globally-connected, and precision-focused public health surveillance system.
