Tell us a little about yourself, including what inspires you to learn and continue in your chosen field
I am Allison Wilson.听 I have nearly 14 years experience in IT, with 12 years in Cybersecurity.听 Cybersecurity is a multi-disciplinary field that constantly changes.听 Even after a decade I still find joy in understanding systems, finding flaws in those systems, and remediating said flaws.听 I currently run my own Cybersecurity consulting firm.
Why did you choose to come to SFU?
I reached out to several PhD programs, but I immediately hit it off with Professor Tayebi after reaching out to potential PhD advisors.听 We both are passionate about cybersecurity.
How would you describe your research or your program to a family member?
I am developing the skill set necessary to create the new AI powered security tools of the future and giving back to the community through research in this area.
What three (3) keywords would you use to describe your research?
Security, Automation, Compliance
How have your courses, RA-ships, TA-ships, or non-academic school experiences contributed to your academic and/or professional development?
The research work I am doing has forced me to be much more systematic and deliberate with how I approach my work in academic and professional settings.
What are some tips for balancing your academic and personal life?
Just like with work/life balance, you need to set boundaries.听 Like a job, you need to set aside time to work on academic work and then time for your own personal well-being.听
Is there anything else you'd like to share?
I play the guitar and I am an avid TTRP player.
