2025 Faculty of Education Year in Review

As we wrap up 2025 and look toward new opportunities in 2026, here's a look back at some of this year’s standout moments.

Dr. Amy Parent Named as UNESCO Co-Chair

Dr. Amy Parent’s international appointment recognizes her commitment to advancing Indigenous research governance and education while extending the invite for communities worldwide to join in on the vision of rematriation.

Dr. David Zandvliet’s Award-Winning Project

Dr. David Zandvliet received a 2025 Regional Centre of Expertise Award for What is Environmental Learning?, a province-endorsed framework that advances sustainability education by integrating Indigenous knowledges and place-based inquiry.

Honouring Our Children in 2025

In September, the EDUC 400 class gathered at the First Peoples’ Gathering House for an event that invited them to learn and unlearn about the history and impacts of Indian Residential Schools.

A New Program Taught by the Language and Literacy Education Faculty

Dr. Robyn Ilten-GeeDr. Greg SutherlandDr. Suzanne Smythe and Dr. Pooja Dharamshi discuss the new MEd in Curriculum and Instruction: Digital and New Media Literacies program which supports educators to reimagine literacy for a digital world by focusing on new media as texts to be critically consumed, remixed and situated within sociocultural contexts.

A New Centre for Advancing K-12 Education

In February, the Faculty of Education launched the Centre for Research and Practice in Teacher Education which operates across all three 51ÉçÇøºÚÁÏcampuses to address key issues in education across B.C.

Honouring 2 Decades of Dedicated Service to French Education

With this year marking the 20th anniversary of the Office of Francophone and Francophile Affairs, we also honour and reflect on Dr. Cécile Bullock’s 20 years of tremendous contribution to SFU’s French-language education.

Students Explore Repatriation Through an Interactive Exhibit

Education students in Dr. Ana Maria Navas Iannini’s course collaborated with the 51ÉçÇøºÚÁÏMuseum of Archaeology Ethnology to create an interactive, choose‑your‑own‑adventure exhibit that invites visitors to explore the ethical complexities of repatriation and healing through hands‑on engagement.

The Office of International Education Welcomed Student Teachers from Japan

After a five‑year pandemic pause, 25 student teachers from Tsuru University returned to 51ÉçÇøºÚÁÏfor three weeks of immersive learning, cultural exchange, and reflective practice that strengthened global partnerships and deepened their understanding of teaching, community, and inclusive education.

Legacy Gift Brings New French‑Language Books to Surrey Students

SFU’s $1,000 legacy gift to École Gabrielle‑Roy celebrates French‑language education and provides students with engaging resources that enhance learning and support their academic growth.

Celebrating 60 Years of Education Leadership

Canada’s premieres recognize the innovative efforts of the 20-year-old tutoring program, Friends of Simon, to support K-12 students’ literacy skills.

Secondary Teachers from Taiwan Collaborate with SFU

In the summer, SFU’s Faculty of Education hosted 50 secondary English teachers from Taiwan for a three‑week professional learning program focused on Teaching English as an Additional Language, reflective practice, and experiential education that participants said expanded their perspectives and teaching approaches.

IDEAS PODCAST

Innovative Dialogue in Educational Approaches and Scholarship (IDEAS) is a series of podcasts created by and for graduate students as a platform to showcase their research practices. The series features graduate students from diverse disciplines at different points in their research, sharing their challenges, accomplishments, and experiences.

Interational Day of Education

In January, the Faculty supported the theme of "Good Schools Need Good School Leaders" through impactful programs and partnerships. Highlights included the Office of International Education and SFU's support of the network.
