PUB 601: Editorial Theory and Practice

This course explores the editorial function in publishing. The concepts and skills learned will help students understand the roles and responsibilities of editors, from acquiring titles to proofreading.

The focus will be on the various levels of editing, from structural and stylistic through to copyediting and proofreading, and on the editor’s role as a sales manager, from building a list and acquiring manuscripts to writing marketing and cover copy. We will also discuss the changing role of the editor and the effect of current market conditions—notably e-books, Amazon and the ongoing digital revolution—on the editorial function.
