PUB 800: Publishing and the Problem of Capitalism

How does publishing really work? This course digs into the generative space between cultural and industrial goals to show how publishers, booksellers, and policymakers make decisions.

PUB800 is a graduate seminar: we work together to engage with the discourse around contemporary publishing and develop for ourselves an up-to-date understanding of how the industry works, why publishers behave as they do, how works get published, what legal and institutional frameworks are at play, and how to make sense of apparent innovations in the field. We read, write, critique, and discuss a wide variety of sources on our way to generating an active community of inquiry.
