PUB 631: Graphic Design: The Page and the Screen
Break free from publishing conventions and redefine the very essence of publications! In this course, we're crafting headfirst into the realm of designers as authors, producers, and publishers.
In this hands-on course, we’ll step outside the usual rules of publishing design and play with what publications can be and do ("Are sandwiches publications!?"). Along with some lectures, the class focuses more on experimentation, discussions, field trips, and projects that push you to explore and figure things out as you go. From playing with the materiality and digitality of publications to decoding their conceptual potential, you'll be questioning the designer's role as an author, producer, and publisher. Through readings, critiques, and hands-on work, we’ll reimagine and reinterpret what publications can be. The big project: You’ll get to propose, design, produce, and exhibit a publication design project that will not only showcase your skills but contributes to the development and understanding of the role of graphic design and designers in society and in publishing.
